Just because the kids are in school, doesn’t mean we can’t extend the summer fun as long as we can. If you’re planning a post-summer trip to beautiful Hilton Head Island, there are plenty of activities for a weekend getaway or a fall break vacation on the beach. While it may not always be warm enough to take a dip in the ocean, you can still find plenty of things to do and sights to see in the late summer and early fall on Hilton Head Island. And the best part? With it being the off-season, it will be a lot less crowded.
We’ve put together a list of things to do and places to go during your next getaway to Hilton Head, so all you need to do is load up the car and head our way!
Water Adventures
With temperatures in the mid 70s during the day in the fall, swimming in the ocean probably won’t be on your itinerary. However, you can’t come to the beach without doing something on the water. At the Coastal Discovery Museum, there are a few different water tour options to choose from. For the more adventurous, take the whole family out for a kayak tour of Jarvis Creek, a less traveled body of water ideal for viewing wildlife. For those that want a more relaxing jaunt out on the water, there are two different dolphin cruises that would be perfect for the whole family.
Heyward House Tour
Some of the best things about the island are its historic homes. Built in 1841, the Heyward House is not only a 4-room Carolina farmhouse that’s been turned into a museum, it’s also the Official Welcome Center of Bluffton. A great starting spot when touring Bluffton’s Historic District, the museum offers guided house and walking tours and living portrait tours that will provide entertainment as well as bit of education.
Sea Pines Forest Preserve
Taking up the southern third of Hilton Head Island, the gated Sea Pines Resort has long been a relaxing getaway for over five decades. Here you bike the beaches, play a round of golf, hit a few tennis balls, or tour the historic ruins of the Stoney-Baynard Mansion. We simply must insist you visit the Forest Preserve as well. With guided boat tours, walking or horseback tours, there is a way for everyone in your group to see the beauty and history in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.
Daufuskie Island
You could easily spend an entire day on Daufuskie Island and still not see everything it has to offer. Walk along the trails or sidewalks under the shade trees dripping with Spanish Moss before stopping into one of the amazing restaurants that offers up some of the freshest and most delicious Low-country dishes you ever tasted. History, art, and nature all together in one beautiful place, they ask you to come and discover the paradise beyond!
