Decades ago, everyone went to drive-in movie theaters. Then came the advancement of Dolby sound systems, reclining seats, and full meals served during the movie, and people began to flock to special theaters with stadium seating and mega-sized soda refills. But when COVID-19 arrived, closing theaters for months, we’ve had to come up with new ways to entertain ourselves. Pop-up drive-in movies have shown up all around the country, and older drive-ins have been renovated and put back into service. And a funny thing has happened. We’ve been reminded of how much fun it can be to pile the family into a car and go watch a movie in our PJs. Great news! Hilton Head has a place that has been in business for a while, so they really know what they’re doing. Here’s what to expect at Hwy 21 Drive In.

When can you go?

Drive-in movies in Hilton Head are a weekend event. Check the schedule to see what’s playing when you want to go, and make your plans for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday evening. Get there early to stake out your spot! Tickets and concessions go on sale at 6:00 pm.

Will there be food?

Go on an empty stomach and plan for plenty of snacks. From burgers and dogs to root beer floats, you can find something to make everyone happy. Don’t forget the popcorn!

Are there special events?

Movies aren’t the only thing that’ll keep you entertained at the drive-in. Check in to see the concerts and special events you might want to go to. You can still have a date night with your special someone, even socially distanced.

Even if you’ve had a long day, your family can still curl up and relax in front of a movie. If it’s been a while, maybe it’s time to rediscover how much fun it is to watch a movie from your vehicle. So pile up the pillows and blankets in the back of the pickup truck, recline your front seats and stretch out, or pop open the tailgate of your SUV, and let’s all go to the drive-in!
